ORIENT IRRIGATION SERVICES INTL. CHALLENGE |
The festive season has truly come and gone, leaving a few spare tyres and a tinge of guilt for many ageing squash players. Needless to say, mix-in nights have been well attended, even though the calorific loss from endless games of squash, does not exceed that gained from the post mortem beverages!
The Orient Irrigation International tournament was played from 1982 up until 1998 at various locations in Dubai and in Sharjah. Players compromised of residents of the U.A.E representing their countries of origin (some dubious connections, however!) battled on.
The tournament (which brings out the worst excesses of nationalist feeling, and hence is one of the most popular of Squash Tournaments) is a long standing fixture in the calendar of events. The tournament is invariably a belting weekends squash, with the get up and go invariably getting up and arriving early.
The tournament is always won by Nikky Harradine's team, which is fair enough as it is her husband Peter Harradine's company that sponsors the event. Nevertheless, there is keen competition for the second and third places.
Essentially there are twelve teams of five players-one from each of four divisions (Autumn season-there are five in Winter season) plus one clompette, what plays 20 minutes squash.
The Committee identifies the teams, nominates a caption for each and away they go.
Nikky Harradine has not only participated and won many titles but as well as the organizer of the event throughout its inception. |
